A Dunedin fisherman got more than he bargained for while fishing near Twizel last weekend.

Tautuku Fishing Club member Ron Johnston snagged himself a monster trout during a fishing competition at Lake Ruataniwha on Sunday.

The fish,  caught with a gold Tasmanian devil lure, weighed 12.93kg.Trout caught in Lake Ruataniwha typically weigh between 0.5kg and 1.5kg.

"I thought I’d caught a log at first.

"It didn’t really fight much until we got it to the surface, but it was so big we had to use two nets, one at each end, to get it out," Mr Johnston said.

He said he had been fairly popular at the fishing club after the catch.

"I’ve had a few fishermen ask to have some steaks from it, but, no, I want to hold on to it."

Mr Johnston planned to give  the fish to the Tautuku  club and have it mounted on the clubroom wall.
