An 18-year-old man charged with murder is to appear in the Dunedin District Court today, after a woman was found dead in Wakari at the weekend.

Police were called to a property in Helensburgh Rd shortly before 3am on Saturday.

They found a deceased woman there.

By Saturday evening, an 18-year-old man had been arrested and charged with her murder.

"One person is in custody in relation to the incident," police said.

A police spokesman said they were not in a position to provide details about the woman’s identity.

Neighbours saw lights and heard noises coming from the house on Friday night or Saturday morning, but said they thought nothing of it.

The occupants had only lived in the home at the centre of the investigation for a few months.

In another part of Dunedin, Fea St in Dalmore, a man knocked on the door of a house about 3am on Saturday and asked to use the phone, a resident said.

Police had no comment on that incident and did not confirm whether it was considered to be linked to the homicide investigation.
