Ryman Healthcare's ''pink palace'' - the Frances Hodgkins Retirement Village, in St Clair - is being repainted in a combination of Spanish white, grey and blue.

The listed healthcare company, which also operates the Yvette Williams retirement complex, on Highgate, is about a quarter of the way through a multimillion-dollar exterior refurbishment of the Frances Hodgkins village.

The project includes replacing the solid balconies with steel, to give residents a better view.

The work should be completed by autumn and was being carried out by Ryman Healthcare's construction team, a Ryman spokesman said.

''The work has been programmed to cause minimal disruption to residents but it is an extensive project because of the scaffolding required.''

The Frances Hodgkins village was opened in 1994 and the refurbishment coincided with its 20th anniversary.
