Access to St Clair Beach will be restricted at times this week to allow large rocks and debris to be cleared.

Dunedin City Council parks and recreation acting group manager Jendi Paterson said the closure would also allow maintenance to be carried out.

''Following the recent severe weather, which included high winds and seas, some rocks and debris have been washed up on to Ocean Beach.''

She said work would begin today and it was expected to take up to three days.

''The work will involve removing large rocks and debris and clearing the entry ramp to St Clair beach.

''Contractors will also deposit 10 truckloads of sand, as a proactive approach to the ongoing protection of the beach and the sand sausages installed last year.''

She said beach access via the ramp would be restricted between 8am and 4pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Access would still be possible at low tide at the St Clair end, via the stairs.

DCC staff had advised the St Clair Surf Life Saving Club to ensure it still has access and can continue its patrols as normal, she said.
