Arrest on indecent assault charge

A Dunedin man is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court after a police investigation of an alleged historic indecent assault.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Ferguson, of Dunedin, said the man was arrested on one charge of indecent assault after several months of police investigation.

The man, who had been teaching at Otago Boys' High School, was bailed to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday.

As the matter was before the court, police declined to comment further.

School rector Clive Rennie, in a joint statement with board of trustees chairman Geoff Bates, said the teacher was suspended from the school last Wednesday.

Counselling had been made available to pupils, and their parents and caregivers had been notified. The school had ''very limited information'' on the complaint and was continuing to seek information from police to undertake its own investigation.
