Dunedin police have arrested a man after he allegedly pointed a BB gun at a passing police car in South Dunedin this morning.

A police spokeswoman said police were alerted about 10.30am when a witness saw a man and woman travelling towards the city centre in a vehicle.

The male driver pointed a hand-held BB gun at a passing police car. The officers in the police car did not see the incident, but the witness followed the vehicle to the Wilson carpark, opposite New World, on Cumberland St, where a hunt began for the occupants.

Police located the BB gun in the car and the man was arrested nearby.

No charges have been laid yet, she said.
