Highway reopens after bridge crash

The main highway south of Dunedin has reopened following a crash on a bridge that closed the road this morning.

Police said the single-vehicle crash occurred on the Taieri River bridge on State Highway 1 near Henley around 4:35am.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said two crews responded, and found the car “hanging off” the bridge.

The driver was thought to have sustained minor injuries.

A crane was brought in to remove the vehicle but the road remained closed for a time to allow the bridge to be assessed.

In an update shortly after 2pm the NZ Transport Agency said the road had reopened, but delays were still possible.
