Bus users thrilled to have time reinstated

Bus commuters who petitioned the Otago Regional Council after it changed a bus departure time from 5.15pm to 5.30pm are thrilled the original time will be reinstated.

Council staff carried out a survey to determine which time bus users preferred, after council staff were presented with a 30-signature petition from bus patrons on the Dunedin city to Port Chalmers service who were unhappy with the change.

Council director of policy and resource planning Fraser McRae said the survey showed a "clear choice" to return to the 5.15pm time.

"We share the goal of the bus users on this route who genuinely wanted to improve the bus service. We appreciate their feedback and the need to understand their service requirements."

Petition organiser Lynne Campbell, of Sawyers Bay, said regular commuters travelling home after work were upset when the timetable change was made with what she described as little consultation.

The timetable change was made to reduce the 55-minute gap between the original 5.15pm service and the next service which leaves the city at 6.10pm.

The time change (back to 5.15pm) will take effect next week.
