The supermarket tills have been ringing for 6-year-old Mosgiel boy Cameron Gillies, who is legally blind.

Swipe, scan, beep and bag.

For 6-year-old Cameron Gillies, getting the chance to operate the cash register at Mosgiel New World was a learning experience like no other.

The Mosgiel boy was born prematurely and as a result, pronounced legally blind at just three months old.

Despite having a small amount of vision, Cameron needed to have direct experiences to learn how things work, and took a liking to New World's little toys.

They helped him learn things about grocery shopping other children would learn visually.

He collected 45 out of the 50 toys available and his parents Alaina and Nathan bought the shopping trolley, basket and cash register to accompany his toys.

However, he did not understand how the cash register worked. Mrs Gillies said Cameron could hear the beeps, but could not see what it was for.

She got in touch with New World and organised for Cameron to go into his local supermarket and learn how to use the checkout.

''He was so excited,'' Mrs Gillies said.

Mosgiel New World checkout manager Pam Stevenson said it was a really nice thing to do for Cameron. She collected a mixture of groceries he was familiar with from the toy versions so he could scan them.

Cameron said his favourite toys were the m&m's and the pump bottle.

Mrs Gillies said she was grateful to New World and it would be a great learning experience for Cameron.

''He is such a happy, clever, determined little boy who wants to give everything a go and soak it all in.''
