The cultural kaleidoscope which makes up the student body at the University of Otago was on display yesterday, during the annual Cultural Carnival.

In its third year, the event was created to raise awareness of the wide range of countries from which Otago students came, or where they had family ties, Otago University Students’ Association international officer Umi Asaka,  representing Japan, said.

"We have had three new clubs join this year, which is really exciting in terms of cultural diversity," Ms Asaka said.

"It’s good to give the many clubs a chance to showcase their culture."

Groups which were at the event included organisations representing Cambodian, Vietnamese, Filipino, Taiwanese, Indonesian, Indian, Omani, Thai, Korean, Singaporean, Malaysian and Japanese students.

Proceeds from the carnival were given to English Language Partners Dunedin, which provides free English tutoring to former refugee families.
