Car knocks down pole, closing road

A car knocked down a power pole yesterday  morning in Dunedin, closing part of State Highway 88 until early afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said the single-car crash happened in Sir John Thorn Dr in Sawyers Bay, near Port Chalmers, at 8.30am.

The driver was not thought to be  injured.

No other people were in the car.

The spokeswoman said there was "some suggestion" ice may have been involved.

The concrete power pole blocked part of Sir John Thorn Dr (SH88) between Roseneath and Port Chalmers. Fire crews were  sent to the scene. The power company had been contacted.

SH88  between the intersections with Station Rd and Wickliffe Tce was closed and a diversion was in place until about 1.45pm, when the road reopened, the NZ Transport Agency advised.
