On Saturday a talk on the history of the garden marked the 50th anniversary of the gifting of the historic property to the city by Dorothy Theomin .
Ms Goldsmith said over 50 years the garden had changed from "a very Victorian-esque style" to an English country appearance.
The grounds were now full of informal gardens within formal borders, she said.
Olveston manager Jeremy Smith said three part-time gardeners were employed to ensure the grounds were preserved but also welcoming to visitors.
About 15 people attended the talk.
