The future of the Dunedin preschool, which 2-year-old Regan Preston left unnoticed by staff last week, will be known soon.
The Ministry of Education would decide if Punavai o le Atamai Pre-School could keep its licence ''in the next week or so'', ministry head of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said yesterday.
''We know the service is making improvements so its premises are more secure - including installing a second gate and changing the door-closing mechanism,'' Ms Casey said.
''However, the ministry and parents need to be confident the centre is making the necessary changes to ensure the safety of all its children and we are seeking further information before making any decisions.
''We will be able to assess the status of the licence when we have received the information.''
The ministry was still investigating how Regan was able to leave the preschool undetected by the eight staff working at the time on August 18.
Regan crossed Macandrew Rd and walked down the street to a Veggie Boys store, about 100m away, before he was found by a passing stranger.
