A digger works at the site of the demolished St James Presbyterian Church in King Edward St yesterday morning.

The church, which was built in 1890, was knocked down in February last year after it was determined it would not meet earthquake standards.

At the time of its demolition, the stained glass window from the church was salvaged for use in a new chapel which is planned for the site.
