A large amount of cigarettes was stolen after ram-raiders smashed through the front of the On The Spot store in Waitati yesterday.

The car believed to have been used was later found abandoned in Double Hill Rd.

Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson said police were searching for four people in connection with the ram-raid, which happened about 3.45am. The shop front was extensively damaged.

It was not known if the incident had been captured on CCTV.

Owner Heather Bell said she was disappointed by what had taken place, but was reluctant to comment.

Det Sgt Henderson warned Dunedin residents to be wary of people selling cheap cigarettes.

''Anyone who is offered cheap cigarettes in the Dunedin area should call police straight away.''
