Mark Ahlfeld's kart victory in his last race of the day at Silverstream on Sunday came the hard way.

Ahlfeld had lined up in pole position for the final rotax 125cc heavy class race for the KartSport Dunedin meeting.

Seconds later the 40-year-old Mosgiel driver spun out on a warm-up lap and was relegated to the back of the pack for the running start.

Ahlfeld, topping 100kmh on the back straight, weaved his way through the field to win the 16-lap final.

About 30 drivers took part in Sunday's meeting.

''It's a friendly family club,'' said Ahlfeld, who is club captain and is leading the season on points.

Ahlfeld's daughter Marissa (9) races in the cadets among several second-generation drivers in the club.

Ahlfeld said KartSport Dunedin had 40 active members and was one of the strongest karting clubs in the South Island. The club races monthly on its 540m raceway at Milners Rd. The next meeting is on July 27.

Ahlfeld said drivers would race under lights in a night meeting on September 6.
