John McGlashan College principal Neil Garry (left) and board of proprietors chairman Tony Sycamore discuss an agenda at Burns Hall, 100 years after the first meeting was held in the same place to found the school.

In April 1917, three acres (1.2ha) of land and buildings at Maori Hill were donated to the Presbyterian Church by settler John McGlashan’s daughters, Margaret and Agnes, for a boys’ college.

Mr McGlashan was an Edinburgh lawyer who oversaw the dispatch of ships to Dunedin  before moving here himself in 1853.

The school will celebrate the centenary of its opening next February.
