Concern after skateboarders tackle Baldwin St

Concerned Baldwin St residents contacted police last night after watching people skateboard down the world's steepest street.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said police were called to the Northeast Valley street shortly before 9pm, following reports two people sitting on their skateboards, and a person following on a bike, were racing down the street.

"Baldwin St is not the street to be pulling silly stunts on. People have tried it and died," he said.

Police could not rule out the trio, who were described as being in their 20s, were being filmed, he said.

In 2001, a 19-year-old University of Otago student was killed when the wheelie bin in which she was travelling down the street struck a parked trailer.
