Questions have arisen about what caused Lindsay Creek in Dunedin to turn bright green this week.

The Otago Regional Council is investigating the substance found in the creek in Northeast Valley on Tuesday.

The council originally said it was caused by non-toxic tracer dye the Dunedin City Council was using in a stormwater drain.

However, some staff have questioned this, and tests are under way.
