Scaffolding surrounds the Dunedin Courthouse in Stuart St yesterday.

The courthouse is undergoing a $20 million renovation to earthquake-strengthen and modernise the heritage-listed building.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said work on the building was continuing.

"Inside the building, work is being undertaken to strengthen the walls and floors," he said.

"On the exterior, stonemasons and glaziers are undertaking repair and maintenance of the stonework and windows."

Services are expected to return to the building in early 2018.
