Crash driver snaps pole, flees scene

Power was cut to some North Dunedin homes and traffic backed up for a time after a driver crashed into a power pole before fleeing the scene last night.

A police spokeswoman said they were called around 11.30pm after a vehicle hit and snapped a power pole at the corner of State Highway 1 and Feat St.

When police arrived there was no sign of anyone in the crashed vehicle.

An Aurora Energy spokesperson said the pole was snapped and power was cut to customers in the Pine Hill Rd and Fea Rd area for several hours. It was restored by 7am after crews replaced the pole.

Police said they would be "making enquiries" about the vehicle's driver.

The NZ Transport Agency advised after midnight that the road was closed, then in a later release said it was under stop/go control.

It is now fully open.
