Arrest after high speed pursuit in Dunedin

A 27-year-old motorist has been arrested on several charges, including failing to stop, driving while disqualified and driving with excess alcohol, after he failed to stop for police in central Dunedin early yesterday.

Police said the man would appear in the Dunedin District Court today, charged also with reckless driving.

Officers had responded to a "fleeing driver incident" after signalling the driver to stop just after 8am, because of his "manner of driving".

The driver failed to stop and fled.

Police followed the vehicle for a short time before abandoning their attempts.

The man was later found at an address in Anzac Ave, and arrested, police said.

Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield told Fairfax police abandoned the pursuit of the Mercedes after the driver reached speeds of 80kmh in a residential area.
