Oddly-clothed burglar stands out

Police are appealing for information about a burglar wearing a hi-vis vest who stole a laptop from a house near the University of Otago, before being chased down the street by the irate victim.

Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson, of Dunedin, said the conspicuous offender woke a resident while burgling a Union St home about 5.30am on Wednesday last week, before the woman chased him down the street.

''She was woken to hear her door open and a guy ran out with her Apple MacBook computer.

''She chased the guy down the street towards the Caltex service station on Great King St.''

The man was described as wearing dark clothes, apart from his high-vis vest, and as being of skinny build.

A police spokeswoman said yesterday officers had not yet caught up with the man, and they would welcome information from anyone who had seen suspicious activity in the area around that time.
