A man was pepper-sprayed after fleeing police and embarking on a spree of bad driving behaviour around Dunedin.

Dunedin motorists witnessed a dramatic scene yesterday afternoon as police cars boxed in the offender’s car, officers smashed a car window and pepper-sprayed him.

A police spokeswoman said they received a report of concerning driving behaviour in Waikouaiti-Waitati Rd about 12.30pm.

The vehicle was pulled over and staff were speaking to the driver when he decided to take off.

Police did not pursue him.

At 2.30pm the vehicle was seen by staff heading southbound on State Highway 1, towards Dunedin. The vehicle was spiked shortly before 3pm in Ravensbourne Rd, but attempted to keep going.

A man who witnessed the incident said three police cars boxed the car in and forced it to stop between Forsyth Barr Stadium and Anzac Ave.

The witness said a police officer smashed the driver’s window and pepper-sprayed him. Another officer pointed a Taser at him.

The male driver spat at police as they arrested him, the witness said.

At least one police vehicle was damaged in the incident.

The police spokeswoman could not confirm if pepper spray was used, but did confirm a 29-year-old man was taken into custody.

No injuries were reported, she said.
