Three in court over Invercargill shooting incident

Three people facing charges in relation to last month’s shooting in Tweed St, Invercargill, appeared via audiovisual link in the Invercargill District Court yesterday, seeking bail with electronic monitoring.

One, Rikki May Garthwaite-Smith (26), was granted bail by Judge Joanna Maze, while Zane Ray Collins (21) and Whetu Taylor (36) will remain in custody after their appeals were unsuccessful.

Yesterday, Taylor entered not guilty pleas to the nine charges he faced, which include possession of methemphetamine and three charges of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Through his counsel Jono Ross, he opted for a jury trial.

Collins appeared on 15 charges, including assault with intent to injure, possession of methemphetamine, possession of an offensive weapon, and four charges of possession of a firearm.

He has not yet entered pleas to the charges but is expected to do so at his next appearance.

Garthwaite-Smith is facing seven charges, including possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm and drugs-related offences. She is also set to enter pleas at her next appearance.

All three were remanded to appear on November 23.

A 19-year-old Invercargill man was shot four times in the back about 4.40pm on October 2 at a Tweed St property.

He survived but required surgery.

A fourth man, who has name suppression, was charged in relation to the shooting last month. Of the eight charges he faces, one is wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear in the Invercargill District Court next week.
