Threat to kill former boss after no work offered

Smashing his former boss' ute with a claw hammer and threatening to kill him has led to a community-based sentence for a young Dunedin man.

Nathan Ivan Peters (22) went to the victim's house at night after being told the man could not offer him more work.

He appeared in the Dunedin District Court for sentencing on Friday, on charges of wilful damage and threatening to kill.

A police summary said Peters arrived about 10.15pm, when the victim was alone in the house.

He smashed the front windscreen of the victim's ute, and the sound of glass smashing led the victim to run outside.

He saw Peters' vehicle parked on the street, and Peters standing by the two vehicles, swinging a claw hammer around.

He threatened to kill the victim, and kicked the victim's driver's door, causing a dent.

Judge Kevin Phillips said that he was concerned about Peters' attitude after he failed to complete a previous sentence of community work.

Peters turned away from both the judge and the public gallery as he stood in the dock.

"Your stance ... doesn't augur very well for a successful completion," Judge Phillips said.

Peters was sentenced to nine months' supervision, four months' community detention, 80 hours' community work and ordered to pay $1000 in damages.
