An elderly female cruise ship passenger has been taken to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter after becoming unwell.

A St John ambulance spokesman said the Emerald Princess passenger had to be airlifted to hospital this mornng after the ship could not make it into port due to foggy and windy conditions.

The woman was picked up by helicopter at 11.20 am and was in stable condition.

The ship was due to dock at Port Chalmers for the first time since the tragic death of a crew member in an explosion on February 9.

However, the bad weather meant it skipped the Dunedin stop and was headed for Akaroa.
