Kit Bayles (22) presses an Anzac cross into the Tower Block lawn at the Otago University College of Education yesterday.

A white cross ceremony was held yesterday in honour of 30 New Zealand soldiers who died during World War 1.

University of Otago lecturer of social sciences Raylene Galvin received the crosses from the Field of Remembrance Trust White Crosses Project as part of WW1 centenary commemorations.

She said her students were able to maintain a link with soldiers who fought in the war by researching the names on the crosses, 22 of whom were soldiers from the Otago region.

''They got the chance to find out the history behind some of the names, where they served, medals they received, where they came from.''

Students each stood a cross on the lawn in front of the College of Education.

The crosses will be in place for two weeks before Mrs Galvin stores them for future study.
