Concrete traffic islands installed as part of the cycleway network beside the entrance to Mobil Northgate Service Station in  Cumberland St last week have  been removed after motorists found them confusing.

Others further down the street  remain in place.

The islands are designed to protect  cyclists travelling in the adjoining cycle lane, and are also intended to slow vehicles crossing them to enter  driveways.

The NZ Transport Agency agreed to review the particular installation  after motorists found the islands  confusing and unhelpful,  agency  projects team leader Simon Underwood said yesterday.

Non-driveable kerbs remain in place.
