Cyclist (16) serious after being hit by truck

A 16-year-old Palmerston cyclist is in a serious condition in Dunedin Hospital after being hit by a large truck and trailer unit.

The teenage girl was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with serious arm and leg injuries yesterday morning.

Police have not released her name.

Senior Constable Stuart Dowling, of Oamaru, said the crash happened on Palmerston-Dunback Rd about 7.15am.

The girl had been riding her road bike when a truck and trailer unit approached her from behind.

''She's come off her bike and sustained serious injuries,'' Snr Const Dowling said.

It was unclear whether she had fallen from her bike or whether the passing truck had caused the accident, he said.

The Palmerston teenager was airlifted to hospital in a ''serious, but stable'' condition and underwent surgery, while the truck driver was treated for shock at the scene.

Snr Const Dowling said police understood the cyclist regularly trained along that stretch of road.

Palmerston-Dunback Rd was closed for a short time while the crash scene was under investigation.

Inquiries are continuing.
