Clearwater Civil operator Chris Gray scrambles through a maze of exposed stormwater and wastewater pipes being repaired in the heart of Dunedin.

The work to replace deteriorating pipes at the intersection of Frederick, George, London and Pitt Sts is being carried out for another two weeks.

Dunedin City Council contract delivery manager Chris Jones said yesterday the work was progressing well and remained on schedule.

A stormwater pipe exposed during the morning had given a clearer picture of ground conditions underneath, including "minimal" signs of erosion around the pipe.

Motorists also remained largely well behaved despite the disruption, although one truck driver had managed to damage a traffic light in the area, he said.

The driver appeared to have been unable to turn in the restricted space available, and barriers were being moved to assist him "when the damage occurred".

Repair costs would be resolved with the relevant insurance companies, he said.

Detours would remain in place for some directions of travel through the intersection until the work was completed.

TCCTV filming of pipes in the area identified two sections of 90-year-old pipes that were cracked and in need of "urgent" replacement.
