Dance of the peacock

Indonesian dancer Niken Waloejo (24), of Auckland, performs the Merak (Peacock Bird) dance, with music provided by Gamelan Puspawarna (the University of Otago's community gamelan ensemble) at Allen Hall Theatre yesterday.

The performance was one of many during the Selebrasi Festival at the weekend, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of the University's Javanese gamelan ensemble.

The festival included talks, performances, workshops and contributions by Wellington's Gamelan Padhang Moncar ensemble, and was masterminded by Gamelan Puspawarna director and Javanese dhalang (puppeteer) Pak Joko Susilo.
