Work is about to begin on the $8million one-way street system cycleway in Dunedin.

The separated cycleway will run on both the north and south-bound one-ways, between the Dunedin Botanic Garden and Queens Gardens.

An artist's impression of what the cycleway will look like as it passes Dunedin Hospital in Cumberland St was released by the NZ Transport Agency.

The agency said Fulton Hogan had won the contract for the work, which would be launched at a small event tomorrow.

The first stretch to be built will run between the botanic garden and Albany St.
