Delivering the opening prayer at the start of the full Dunedin City Council meeting yesterday is Sheikh Asrarul Haque Obaidullah, Imam of the Al Huda mosque.

In his prayer Mr Obaidullah spoke of the need for forgiveness and compassion.

Mayor Dave Cull thanked the imam, who was scheduled to speak before the Christchurch terror attacks, for making the time to deliver the prayer despite what had happened in the past 11 days.

Since 1995, representatives of different faiths have been invited to give the opening prayer at full council meetings.

I never knew this 'Since 1995, representatives of different faiths have been invited to give the opening prayer at full council meeting' Well done DCC, I'd now expect to see this in the ODT for other faiths have been covered also.

Again well done DCC
