'Parklets' coming

''Parklets'' will begin cropping up in George St in central Dunedin next month.

Three of the small green or seating spaces would be installed in former bus stops, now redundant following the opening of the bus hub, the Dunedin City Council said in a statement yesterday.

The location of two more parklets was yet to be confirmed.

In total, the five parklets will cost about $167,000.

Their installation was part of a series of trials for George St under the Central City Plan, the first of which, the Glow Festival, was held in July.

Council urban designer Luke McKinlay said the parklets would provide green spaces in the centre of town for people to sit, relax and enjoy the city.

They are being fabricated off site from materials including steel and wood, and can be relocated if required.

The council is also appealing for expressions of interest for artists to decorate concrete plinths in one of the parklets

Applications close on August 26 and more information can be found on its website.

Who asked for this? How about turning those bus stops into extra parking?? That's right local government in NZ is run by the car hating misanthropic UN not the local people. Agenda 21 and 2030 must be implemented to please their global socialist overlords. Ex leader of socialist international J Ardern will be pleased with you comrades...

Who asked for this? Many submitters ie local people, to Dunedin's 2GP and annual plans. Doubt if they would even know what is meant by Agenda 21 and 2030. Socialist cities are hardly known for their green spaces either.
