Dramatic drop in demand for driving classes

Demand for driving classes for older drivers has come to a screeching halt this year.

Age Concern co-ordinator Kristen Beardsmore said for some reason demand for the courses had ''stagnated''.

''Last year, I was inundated. Classes were 20 to 30 people.''

For the first class this year - in Mosgiel on Monday - only five people have so far enrolled. The class at the Octagon Club on March 5 has just three signed up to attend.

Ms Beardsmore said she was at a loss as to why demand was so low for the courses this year, especially considering they were free and included a free lunch as well.

''I think it is because it is just so sunny. People are too busy out and about.''

The class looks at aspects of driving that have changed over the years and also explores safety issues that apply to people as they get older.

Ms Beardsmore said the driving environment around Dunedin was different from what it was 20 years ago.

Some of the topics covered include how to enter and exit the motorway safely, the meaning of different road markings and how to use roundabouts.

''Dunedin does not have a lot but they are quite unusual roundabouts.''

It was good idea for anyone who had been driving for a long time to refresh themselves on the road rules and driving techniques, Ms Beardsmore said.

The refresher course was classroom-based with no actual driving, so it was not a stressful experience for people, she said.

The free courses are open to anyone over 65. Phone: 477-1040.
