Fulton Hogan staff (from left) summer intern Michaela Day, environmental engineer Lydia Perkins  and site foreman Gordon McGregor inspect the opening to a stormwater chamber in Great King St yesterday.

The accessway on Great King St by North Ground was uncovered during work to  build a cycleway on the one-way system in Dunedin.

The accessway connects to a stormwater or sewer system, a plan for which shows a system running from Frederick St to the Water of Leith.

NZ Transport Agency projects team leader Simon Underwood said the work was being done under an archaeological authority.

An archaeologist had measured and photographed what had been uncovered, and would write a report on what had been discovered.

The accessway was no longer needed and had been covered by a kerb.
