A Dunedin artist will head to Austria later this year after beating 800 international applicants for a three-month residency there.

Otago Polytechnic Dunedin School of Art graduate Arati Kushwaha has been accepted as the 2019 artist-in-residence with KulturKontakt Austria.

The placement is offered by the Austrian Federal Chancellery in co-operation with KulturKontakt.

It includes a studio, enabling the recipient to become familiar with the Austrian art scene and make contact with Austrian artists.

Kushwaha, who graduated with a masters degree in 2018, explores themes of gender, identity, sexuality, femininity, self-induced abortion and destruction.

She plans to complete a work during her time in Austria.

The residency starts in October.
