And it's now official, after Mr Uelese took first place in the customer service category at the Go Bus Transport national Bus Roadeo competition.

Mr Uelese, who has been driving buses for more than 10 years, was one of 11 finalists who demonstrated their skills in theory, vehicle inspection, customer service and driving skills at the event in Christchurch on March 11.

He was selected from more than 2000 employees across the country.

Mr Uelese said serving the passengers and his community made him love his job.

"I aim to provide the very best experience for my passengers each time they step on my bus. It is my career and it is good to show off my service and experience,'' he said.

Mr Uelese said he drove on the Portobello School run in the morning, and then drove the Normanby to St Clair bus in the afternoon.

While most of his passengers did not know about the award, his colleagues all did - his Bus Roadeo success had been publicised on the drivers' noticeboard, he said.

Go Bus managing director Calum Haslop said the organisation was proud of Mr Uelese and all the company's other finalists and winners.

"We are very proud to have him as part of the Go Bus team.''
