A family home in Waverley was badly damaged in a fire tonight which quickly engulfed its lounge.

Dunedin Central senior station officer Phil Marsh said the fire was well involved when the service arrived at the Somerville St property at 7.50pm.

Firemen worked to save the remainder of the house, and removed the family's van from a garage underneath the living area.

The home's owner, Senita Fakava, said he and his wife were heading home from work when they saw their home ablaze from several streets away.

He was relieved his daughter, niece, and her daughter were all safely out of the house when they arrived.
