Dunedin man in hospital after street beating

A Dunedin man is in hospital with serious head injuries following an assault by up to 20 people overnight in the city centre, police say.

It appeared up to 20 people were involved in the attack on the 30-year-old, which happened in a carpark off Rattray St across from Queens Garden about 1am, Detective Sergeant Rob Hanna said.

"At this stage we do not know what started this altercation. However, once the victim has fallen on the ground it appears he has been set upon by numerous people and kicked in the head and body a number of times."

The group left the area in four vehicles.

The victim was in Dunedin hospital with serious facial and head injuries but they were not thought to be life threatening.

Police wanted to hear from anyone with information, Mr Hanna said.

"There were a large number of people in the area when this happened and we would like those people to contact us so we can establish what they witnessed."
