When Christal Stevens (16), Taylor Hendl (15) and Andrea Brookes-Churcher (15), from Bayfield High School, joined the queue at 6am they had to line up behind Miranda Hooper and Rebecca Burnett, from Kaikorai Valley College, and Miranda's cousin Amanda Hooper (all aged 16), who camped outside the Regent Theatre's ticket office overnight.
Miranda said they slept out because they "really wanted" tickets to the March 7 concert at the Dunedin Town Hall, featuring Australian band the Veronicas, among others.
They arrived at 10.30pm on Wednesday.
Their parents and grandparents checked on them regularly during the night.
Miss Brookes-Churcher said her three hours in the queue were not wasted - she studied for the year 11 science exam being held yesterday afternoon.
By 9am, the girls were at the front of a line of about 50 people waiting to buy tickets for the concert.
A Ticketek spokeswoman said the SummerJam concerts were always popular and ticket sales were strong yesterday.
