Two new murals unveiled in Dunedin during the past week highlight the city's growing status as a street art destination, Dunedin City Council street art spokesman Scott Muir says.

The paintings in Moray Pl - a moa by UK artist Phlegm and lace by Polish artist NeSpoon - were added to Dunedin's growing collection on February 29 and March 3 respectively.

Mr Muir said a network of overseas artists was now talking about Dunedin as an art destination.

‘‘We've now developed a reputation about this [movement] and they want to come to Dunedin.''

Phlegm and NeSpoon knew each other, but did not know they would be in Dunedin at the same time, Mr Muir said.

Phlegm had painted a mural on the side of Vogel St Kitchen and wanted to come back to the city, and the council had been in conversation with NeSpoon for quite some time, Mr Muir said.

Dunedin's growing street art collection was becoming a drawcard for tourists, he said.

‘‘There's a lot more foot traffic in the city because of it.''
