Easter trading backed

An Otago Daily Times online poll yesterday gathering feedback on reader’s views on Easter Sunday trading showed majority support for shops opening on the day.

The Dunedin City Council this week voted to put a policy proposing all shops could legally open on Easter Sunday out for public consultation.

Decisions on Easter Sunday trading were devolved to councils after the Government amended the Shop Trading Hours Act last year.

The unscientific poll showed 404 respondents favoured shops being able to open at Easter, and 298 against the idea.

Comments on the issue included that of Dan Harman, who said: "Of course they should."

"Come on, people, it’s 2017, and as long as staff are protected, businesses should be able to trade when they like."

Julia Smith said: "Give the workers a break."

She felt sorry for people working on holidays in non-essential services.

"No need for shops to be open."
