Epidemiologists converge on Otago

Two hundred epidemiologists from New Zealand and Australia will converge on the University of Otago this week for a three-day transtasman conference.

It is the first time the Australasian Epidemiological Association's annual scientific meeting has been held in Dunedin, and only the second time it has been held in New Zealand since 1992.

Participants were welcomed yesterday and over the next two days a series of papers will be given on a wide range of subjects, including home injury hazards, occupational risk factors for lung cancer, and assessing the health effects of pollution exposure.

Epidemiology is a branch of medicine that involves studying the causes, distribution and control of disease in populations.
