The Otago Farmers Market is in the running to be voted the best in the country — but public votes are needed, market general manager Kate Vercoe says.

The market had been nominated for the Outstanding Farmers’ Market category of the national Outstanding Food Producer awards — alongside more than 30 others.

Taste Nature and Marbecks Food Store were also both in the running for the specialty food store category.

Ms Vercoe said the market was ‘‘really something to be proud of’’, as it had more than 70 vendors at the market at this time of year.

‘‘We really want Dunedin people to vote for us.’’

She said the market averaged more than 8000 people attending on a good weekend, but even in the cold winter mornings there was a good turnout.

‘‘People [are] really starting to appreciate local food.’’

★ Votes for the Outstanding Farmers’ Market category can be placed at outstandingfoodproducer.nz/ farmers-markets. Voting closes on March 31.

I would go there a lot more often if they moved it to a bigger location. Parking is a nightmare and having to push your way through the crowd in such a small space keeps me away now.
