Fashion week seeks backers

The id Dunedin Fashion Week committee is again facing a desperate scramble to secure major sponsors, leaving itself a fortnight before having to start withdrawing events from its 2010 calendar.

Since a major sponsor withdrew backing after the 2007 show, the committee has battled to secure support.

The Southern Trust Inc sponsored the past two events.

Committee chairwoman Susie Staley said reasonable funding had been secured, which had allowed them to announce dates for next year's fashion week.

About $500,000 is needed to run the not-for-profit event.

The 2010 week, scheduled for March 8-14, includes two consecutive evening shows on a Friday and Saturday night, at the Dunedin Railway Station. This is the first time the committee has contemplated holding the main show over two nights.

Ms Staley said the funding was needed so the event could continue to evolve and live up to its reputation for highlighting emerging talent.

"We could consider postponing some of the events within the week, but don't want to compromise the reputation of an event that has helped nurture some of New Zealand's most successful fashion designers, including Tanya Carlson, Nom*D, and Mild Red."
