Green Island’s Derek Wilson knows a thing or two about being a dad.

Yesterday, he was with his son, Mike, and grandson, Keri, fighting for the crown of best-dressed father and son (and in this case, grandson) during the Mates Car Cruise Father’s Day breakfast and cruise, at Nichol’s Garden Centre.

The boys fought hard but had to make do with second place on the day, despite featuring some Sterling accessories of caps (facing both forwards and backwards), wigs and sunglasses.

The self-described petrol heads, who all live in Green Island, faced off on a hastily cobbled-together catwalk at Nichol’s against a modern dad with a top knot and two children, a more traditional bald dad with a beard and one son, and a man and his dog  both  dressed in high-vis  outfits.

A shared love of cars appeared to be a motivating factor keeping the Wilsons — Gazza, Wazza and Bazza for the event — together.

"We’ve been into cars all our lives. This is what we do."

Mr Wilson sen said "concentration" was the key to producing such strapping offspring.

Organiser Paul Mann said the cruisers were off to Balclutha and Kaitangata after the event.
