Female pelvic services boost

Fewer women will have to travel for treatment outside the Southern District Health Board because two obstetrician/gynaecologists have been certified in the subspeciality of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.

The qualification is administered by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the American Board of Urology. It involves treatment of urinary problems, pelvic floor function, and prolapse.

The certifications would reduce the number of women referred to other boards for treatment. The specialists are Associate Prof Mike Stitely, at Dunedin Hospital, and Dr Erika Hunter, at Southland Hospital.

Board chief executive Carole Heatly said the pair had been recognised as experts by organisations with the highest clinical standards in the world. The final stage of a lengthy certification process was passing an exam.
