Fine start to holiday weekend

Forecasts for the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend promise a fine start but mixed end to the three-day break.

MetService spokesman Daniel Corbett said a large anticyclone would bring some pleasant weather for the first half of the weekend but it would start to change from the west on Sunday.

In the second half of the weekend, a weather system was likely to bring cloud and some rain, especially to the west and south of the South Island.

"A few showers and cloudy spells may also sneak across to eastern areas on Monday."

There will be some drier spells mixed in through the weekend, especially in eastern areas.

Temperatures were expected to reach the early teens.
